Our brand new house will, of course, come equipped with a brand new kitchen, which, we have decided, should itself come equipped with a brand new set of cutlery! In our search for a suitable set of flatware, we've explored a range of options. From Finland, we considered Iittala's Nanny Still-designed Mango range. However, we have in fact used this set in the past, and really wanted something completely new for Talo Luck. We decided to investigate what British design might have to offer, and discovered David Mellor Design. Sheffield-born David Mellor CBE, Royal Designer for Industry, originally trained as a silversmith, but now designs a wide range of glass and pottery items, furniture, and flatware. David Mellor cutlery is manufactured in a unique purpose-built circular factory designed by Sir Michael Hopkins. The award-winning factory itself has been described as a "minor masterpiece of modern architecture", and is actually open to the public. Our favourite David Mellor design is (quite fittingly, given the man of the house's roots) London. The set includes a wide range of knives (including a super-sleek steak knife), forks, and spoons, making it a versatile addition to any kitchen. Simple in form, with a silky matt finish, these little pieces of London are certainly befitting of our little piece of England here in the far North! More info from David Mellor Design.
